by Ben Moses Ebreo
Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya (January 13) -- The Junior Chamber International Philippines(JCIP), a worldwide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs in this province recently commemorated the 22nd death anniversary of then mayor Benjamin "Boyie" Cuaresma,Jr. here.
The JCI conducted a fun run around the town at 4:00 a.m. Monday(January 11) and offered flowers and candles on Cuaresma's sites of his tortured body in barangay Salinas and in the public cemetery in barangay Buag here.
Benjamin, was the husband of incumbent governor Luisa Cuaresma and father of incumbent Bambang mayor Benjamin "Jamie" Cuaresma III.
"Boyie" was taken, tortured and murdered by communist rebels during the campaign period as the province is at its peak of the insurgency in 1987, a year after the February 1996 EDSA People Power Revolution ousted then President Ferdinand Marcos from its 20-year rule.
During the mid - 80s, communist insurgency in Nueva Vizcaya is at its peak where most its 275 villages have been influenced, not to include the presence of shadow governments in the communities.
The death of "Boyie" who was well-loved by his constituents and feared by his fellow politicians then drew sympathy not only in his municipality but in the province as well and demanded the deployment of the military's elite Scout Ranger units who flushed out communist insurgency in the province.
During the period, "Boyie's" wife, Luisa took over the campaign trail and won as mayor of Bambang town, as vice governor and eventually as governor of Nueva Vizcaya. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
