Five Western Mindanao areas identified as election hot spots
Dipolog City (14 January) -- The military has recently identified five areas in Western Mindanao as potential critical places during the campaign period up to the May 10 election this year.
Western Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Ben Dolorfino listed Basilan and Sulu among the areas of concern due to the previous incidents of political wars and the presence of armed groups including the Abu Sayyaf and the rebel forces.
On the other hand, Zamboanga Peninsula police director C/Supt. Angelo Sunglao listed five towns in the three Zamboanga provinces as ‘areas of concern. These are Buug town of Zamboanga Sibugay, La Libertad, Sibuco, Sirawai, Siocon and Baliguian towns of Zamboanga del Norte.
To ensure a peaceful conduct of the May 10, 2009 election, the police, military and COMELEC are slated to hold a general conference to discuss matters concerning security in the area. (PF/PIA-ZN) [top]
