DCWD's "Adopt-a-Site" to save water and watersheds continues

by Prix D. Banzon

Davao City (15 January) -- The campaign of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) on "Save the Watersheds, Save Water. Adopt-A-Site Now !" continues where the donor's yearly donation of P6,000 for five years will ensure reforestation of one hectare in the Mt. Talomo-Lipadas Watershed in Davao City.

DCWD general manager Rodora Gamboa told reporters in a recent gathering on at Krua Thai this city that the existing sites which are the Malagos and the Mt. Apo-Lipadas Watersheds continue to be recipient of support from schools, organizations, institutioorns and individuals for rehabilitation activities.

She said the Malagos Watershed had about 53.5 hectares adopted by 42 institutions while the Mt. Apo-Lipadas Watershed of 60 hectares covered had about 31 donors.

The money donated for the first year will be used for seeding/nursery planting (fruit and forest trees), plantation establishment (brushing, staking, holing, fertilizing), maintenance (brushing, weeding, replanting, fertilizing) and other administration cost.

For the second to fifth years the money will be used for maintenance activity (brushing, weeding, fertilizing), replanting, fertilization and administration cost.

In a briefer issued by DCWD it said that the conservation program came in the 80s with the worsening deforestation problems. It said that although Davao City's main source of water supply is groundwater it is largely dependent on two watersheds -- the 235 hectares Malagos Watershed in Calinan and the 38,400 hectares Mt. Talomo-Lipadas Watershed located within the foot slopes of Mt. Apo Natural Park.

The comprehensive, sustainable, and community-based watershed rehabilitation program in Mt. Talomo-Lipadas was fully implemented in 1993. The project aims to rehabilitate 530 hectares in the mountains' three barangays namely, New Daliaon and Tungkalan in Toril District and Manuel Guianga in Tugbok District.

In another development and the approval of DCWD citizen charter, it is now mandatory that those applying for new connections will first undergo seminar.

Gamboa said they deemed it necessary that the public must be briefed about the agency's profile, the water pressure profile of all the service areas, different water system, fees and charges, rights and responsibilities of an account holder, meter reading and billing, water rates ans front line services.

The five front line services identified in the citizen's charter are the processing of: New Service Application, Water Bills Payment, Customer Assistance (complaints, queries, reports, requests), Reconnection of Water Service, and Transfer of Water Meter.

Gamboa meanwhile said that they also continue their advocacy with the students by holding symposium, debate and extemporaneous speaking contest focusing on water, watershed and the environment. (PIA) [top]
