Goiter Awareness Week features fun walk

Manila (15 January) -- This year's celebration of Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) will introduce the fun walk on January 24 to help drum up interest, according to organizer Teofilo O.L. San Luis, Jr., ICCIDD director and country representative.

Celebrities are also being tapped to draw public attention to the event, with Actor Richard Gutierrez joining the fun walk as GAW 2010 celebrity endorser.

Assembly area area for the fun walk is at the back of the Cultural Center of the Philippines edifice; it will pass along Pres. Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard and end at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

The fun walk will start at 7:00 AM with warm-up exercises courtesy of Healthy Lifestyle Society using Nigari Waza (Tai Chi) before the walk.

The Walk's route will be Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard up to the Mall of Asia where some surprise treats await the finishers (c/o Salinas Foods, Inc). Bottled water, freebies and some give-aways will also be distributed to the registered participants. All participating organizations are encouraged to bring their respective streamers, banners, tarpaulins, and other gimmicks to identify themselves and make the occasion more festive and colorful. Security will be provided by Phil College of Occupational Medicine and the Pasay City Police.

The Fun Walk welcomes families and friends to show solidarity to our advocacy of promoting thyroid health and the elimination of iodine deficiency disorders.

Partner organizations in the national coalition against thyroid diseases and iodine deficiency disorders -- called the Philippine Thyroid Council -- are each allocated 20 violet-colored T-shirts printed with the GAW logo to be used for the occasion (Kiwanis Phil Luzon District will have 200 pieces as this is the largest delegation). These T-shirts will be delivered to organization offices or to its president or representative sitting in the GAW Org Comm. Registration will have to be made beforehand with Kiwanis partners (Ms Edna Garcia (CP: 0905-418-0703; e-mails: ), ) in order to avail of the Php 150 pre-registration (on site registration: Php 200).
