PNP 6 validates election watch list areas in Western Visayas

by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (15 January) -- PNP 6 Regional Director, Chief Supt. Isagani Cuevas said that they are still on the process of validating information on election watch list areas in Western Visayas before disclosing it publicly.

In a PIA interview, Cuevas said that they will announce the identified watch list areas in due time.

These areas, Cuevas said, were identified based on the previos election exercises from 2004 and 2007 where there occurred some election related violence incidence, and including areas where there were reported presence of the NPA.

"The Police and the AFP will watch these areas in order to prevent any election-related violence incidence to happen during the election period," Cuevas said.

On the first arrests on gun ban violators, Cuevas said that it sends a message to everyone that the enforcement agencies are serious in implementing the gun ban and the setting up of checkpoints.

He appealed to the public to cooperate with the authorities who are implementing the gun ban so as to achieve the conduct of honest, orderly and peaceful elections on May 2010.

Meanwhile, PNP Chief, Director General Jesus A. Verzosa, directed Police Regional Directors to closely supervise election security operations of PNP field units particularly those manning Security Control Points of the PNP-Comelec-AFP Joint Security Control Centers on different localities.

The PNP press report disclosed that the PNP police Operational Procedures shall be strictly observed by police personnel manning checkpoints particularly in situations where search, seizure and arrests are made, including the use of reasonable force against violent aggression.(PIA6) [top]
