Abrenios air support for relieved PNP provincial director

by Maritess Beņas

Bangued, Abra (16 January) -- The people of Abra aired their support to as well as their sentiments on the relief of Philippine National Police Provincial Director, PSSupt. Charlo C. Collado last January 11, 2010.

In an interview with Governor Eustaquio Bersamin, he was saddened when he learned that Collado was relieved for an incident that happened in the province during his absence.

The "shootfest" sponsored by a politician in the province on January 10, 2010, the start of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban, was carried out while Collado was on official travel outside the province and did not issue any permit to carry out such an activity.

The local officials here as well as the people recognize the good performance of Collado as the provincial director. Last year, he brought together all the opposing candidates to a peace accord. He also caused the continuing police visibility and disarming of private bodyguards and followers of political leaders in Abra.

Because of these initiatives and efforts of Collado, there had been no politically-related violent incidents yet in the province. Such a state is very much unusual in Abra which had been tagged as the "Killing Fields in the North" in the past years.

The continuity and sustainability of the peace initiatives in the province will surely be adversely affected by the relief of Collado especially because he had already established his rapport with his fellow government executives, the church and the non-government sector in the province. More over, Collado had gained the respect of the political leaders here. (PIA-Abra) [top]
