Transport leader supports mandatory SSS membership for drivers

by Lito Dar

Baguio City (23 January) -- City Public Transport Affairs Office (PTAO) head and 1–United Transport Coalition (1-Utak) North Luzon transport coordinator Jun Itliong lauded the program of the Social Security System (SSS), in partnership with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, for the mandatory membership for public transport drivers.

"In my years of experience in the public transport sector I have seen many of our comrades passed away without getting benefits or without leaving anything for their family, but with this program of the government they will not only be entitled to the many benefits SSS can offer but they can also assure that they will have something to leave for their family or their children," Itliong said.

Itliong stressed that there were already public transport members/drivers who have voluntary enrolled themselves to SSS, as they have already realized the need and importance to secure their health and at least to save for the future of their family.

"Hindi habang buhay kaya nating magmaneho, paano kapag dumating ang panahon na hindi na natin kaya pang magtrabaho," Itliong said.

According to Itliong, this is one of the government programs that they are focusing now, to ensure that all public transport operators will oblige as this will also be beneficial to each member of the public sector,

Itliong lauded LTFRB chief Suansing for giving more teeth for the program, He also thanked SSS AVP for Northern Luzon Luis Olais for giving the transport sector an orientation regarding the benefits they avail through such program.

Itliong also confirmed that the program is already being implemented since the registration started this January. He explained that under the SSS and LTFRB agreement, all public transport operators must submit the names of their drivers and enrolled them as members of SSS, before they can secure a certificate of confirmation for registration.
