NFA Palawan exceeds 2009 procurement target by 130%
Puerto Princesa City (25 January) -- The National Food Authority-Palawan exceeded its procurement target by 80,576 bags or 30% more than its 265,000 bags in 2009. In an interview with THE Asst. Provincial Manager Roberto B. Buņag, he said that the increase is due to the strong market participation of the local farmers brought about by the increase in NFA's buying price of P17.50 up from the old buying price of P11.00.
Mr. Buņag also said that the city and the entire province will have ample rice supply in spite of the threat of the El Niņo this year. As of now, the NFA warehouses and buying stations have a total palay inventory of 212,216 bags and rice of 35,290 bags. With a daily rice requirement of 7,640 bags, Palawan is assured of 23 days of rice supply which is over the mandatory stock of 15 days.
He also said that the summer harvest in March and April will further boost the rice inventory stock in the NFA warehouses. Over and above this is the expected 109,000 bags of palay arriving in June from Batangas which is part of the rice imported by the country.
NFA maintains 6 warehouses in Puerto Princesa City, Narra, Brooke's Point and Coron with the largest in GID Narra 3 which has a design capacity of 100,000 bags. It has 3 buying stations strategically located in Rizal, Quezon and Bataraza.
In Palawan, there are 225 Tindahan Natin and Barangay Bigasan Outlets which assist the NFA in rice distribution to the ultimate consumers. (PIA) [top]
