RP solar-powered car hits Davao

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (26 January) -- Sikat, the country's second solar car, is in Davao City as part of its 50-day roadshow across the Philippines.

Jonathan Go, a Member of the solar car team and a student of the De La Salle University-Manila, told the media in yesterday's Kapehan sa SM that the tour is aimed at increasing the awareness of students on the latest technology using solar energy.

Although the car is designed only for racing but we want to encourage the youth to enhance their creativity and innovativeness, said Go.

The tour started at the DLSU campus last January 12 and off it goes to major cities in the country like Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Cebu City. In Davao, exhibits were arranged at SM City, at the Ateneo de Davao University, and the University of Mindanao.

The Sikat Solar Car is set to compete in this year's World Solar Car Challenge in Australia. The team's Sinag Solar Car garnered 12th place in the same competition in 2007.

Sikat is an improved version of Sinag, with better design features like new generation sun power cells and more maneuverable and aerodynamic design.

It features solar cells provided by Sunpower, a company that provides the highest efficiency solar cells in the world.

It prides its lightweight carbon fiber body which can only be found in the latest F1 car models.

The team expects a better ranking in the competition this year with Sikat lighter by 100 kilograms. Experts claimed that it can outrun Sinag with its top speed capacity of 112 kph. (PIA XI) [top]
