Bacolod City braces for El Niņo
Bacolod City (26 January) -- The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod directed City Agriculturist Goldwyn Nifras to immediately meet with the Department of Agriculture on preparations for the impending El Niņo, or dry season, through a resolution it passed.
It also directed Nifras and all technical personnel of the City Agriculture Department (CAD) to conduct a forum or periodic symposium for all agricultural sectors of Bacolod in preparation for the effects of El Niņo.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has created a national task force on El Niņo to lead and oversee the implementation of mitigating measures.
The Department of Agriculture will carry out the program which will focus on the 23 highly vulnerable areas and 24 moderately vulnerable areas in the country.
The resolution said the national government has allocated P2.58 billion for the implementation of the program in the whole country.
The budget will be used for cloud seeding operations, constructions of water support schemes, provision of high breed seeds, farm implements and fertilizers to farmers and the distribution of animal stocks, biologics and drugs for livestock growers. (PIA/cad) [top]
