Cagayan to hold Environment Summit
Tuguegarao City (26 January) -- The Provincial Government of Cagayan, through the Provincial Committee on Sustainable Development (PCSD), will be conducting environment summit to strengthen stakeholders' role in mitigating climate change effects.
Forester Robert E. Adap of the Provincial Natural Resources and Environment Office-Cagayan (PNREO) and acting chair of PCSD, said the summit aims to intensify peoples' consciousness on the aspect of adaptation and mitigation to climate change in the context of sustainable development in the province.
Adap said the summit will produce a portfolio of mitigation, adaptation and learning activities against the risk of intolerable magnitudes and rates of global warming.
"The summit will gather into one the various stakeholders to come up with strategies in mitigating and take part in adapting measures to alleviate the adverse impacts of climate change", Adap said.
The summit will be conducted on February 4-5, 2010 at Hotel Kimikarlai, Tuguegarao City with expected 250 participants from different government agencies, non-government organizations, legislators, media, youth organizations and academe.
The participants will identify factors that cause climate change and the solutions to the problem.
Adap also stated that during the meeting he will present the state of the forest and coastal areas of the province while Engr. Leo Bunyag of PAG-ASA will discuss current global and local climate scenarios and its impact to local communities.
On the other hand, Dr. Artemio Antolin will enhance discussion on climate vulnerabilities of the province and current adaptation and mitigation initiatives and Dr. James Pattaguan, Vice President of St Louis University will discuss the role of the academe in environment and sustainable development.
