25 NVizcaya rebel returnees get P.125-M cash assistance

by Ben Moses Ebreo

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (January 28) -- Former communist rebels in this province have received cash assistance from the provincial government here in its bid to provide assistance for their livelihood projects.

At least 25 members of the Nueva Vizcaya Rebel Returnees Association(NVRAA) personally received P5,000.00 each from governor Luisa Cuaresma Monday(January 25) during a simple turn-over ceremonies at the provincial capitol here.

The recipient NVRRA members represented the 5th batch of the more than 300 former communist rebels who have vowed to start their life anew.

The NVRRA members also elected their new set of officers for 2010?2011.

The financial assistance was coursed through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) from the provincial government's 20 percent development fund.

Since its organization in 2007, the NVRRA members have continuously received cash assistance to the provincial government.

The assistance came after Governor Luisa Cuaresma whose husband Benjamin popularly known as "Boyie" was killed by New People's Army in 1987 vowed to help former communist rebels and provide assistance to start their new life in their communities.

It was in the late 80s that Nueva Vizcaya was at the height of insurgency, some local government units even succumbed to shadow government operated and managed by the communists.

The provincial government's continuing assistance to the NVRRA members was facilitated jointly by the PSWDO, DSWD and the national government's Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP). (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
