Military answers civilian's call for help vs NPA bandits in Northern Samar
Tacloban City (January 30) -- One soldier was wounded in action while one was killed and another two were wounded in the NPA side in an encounter at about 10:00 in the morning of January 29, at Barangay Santander, Bobon, Northern Samar.
This was relayed to the Philippine Information Agency by Lt. Colonel Armando Rico, spokesman of the 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army based in Catbalogan City, Samar.
It was learned that elements of the 20th Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Florencio Tayo responded to the information given by civilians that more or less 20 New People's Army bandits were conducting extortion activities and collecting foodstuffs at Barangay Santander, about 14 kilometers from the town proper of Bobon, Northern Samar.
Upon reaching the area, the government troops were fired upon by the alleged NPA bandit group. A firefight ensued and lasted for about 10 minutes.
The members of the NPA then retreated in different directions dragging along their casualties.
Wounded in action on the government side was Sgt. Floro Lozano while on the enemy side, one was killed and two others were wounded.
The government troops recovered from the encounter site one (1) M16 rifle; two (2) Icom handheld radios and subversive documents.
Lt. Colonel Rico said that the military conducted pursuit operations right after the said encounter.
I would be recalled that an all out offensive against the NPA was issued by Major General Arturo Tabaquero, commanding officer of the 8th Infantry Division on June 18, 2009, after two separate encounters happened in one day between the 20th Infantry Battalion and members of the New People's Army at Barangay Duron, Bobon, Northern Samar.
