DSWD to build 493 core shelter units in Cagayan
Tuguegarao City (1 February) -- The Province of Cagayan will be receiving 493 units of core shelter projects from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 2, for the families who were heavily affected during the typhoon "Pepeng".
As part of the disaster recovery plan of DSWD 2, Director Arnel B. Garcia said the proposed core shelter units are under process and expected to be awarded to the target beneficiaries in the next few months.
Garcia said this city is expected to be given a total of 122 units as it was declared as the hardly hit area after the typhoon. Municipalities of Sto. Nino, Tuao, Iguig, Penablanca, Lallo, Lasam, and Sta Teresita are likewise to be awarded core shelter units.
"Each beneficiary will be given 70,000 pesos to build their houses but the Local Government Unit will take as a counterpart the provision of lot and gravel while the beneficiaries must help in the construction", Garcia said.
If the proposed units will be granted, the government will spend 34 million pesos for the said project and it is expected to help more or less 2,000 family members.
Garcia further explained that the design of the units is based on a standard design, however, if the Local Government Units can come up with their own design provided that the budget for each unit will not exceed to 70,000 pesos. If it exceeds than the LGU should shoulder the additional expense.
Garcia also stated that the disaster recovery plan is region 2's pioneer project and he is encouraging other regions to copy the same plan for the benefit of other Filipinos. (Oliver B/PIA 2) [top]
