PIA Press Release

February is dental health month

Tacloban City (February 1) -- The month of February is observed as the National Dental Health Month pursuant to Proclamation 559 issued by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on February 24, 2004.

The presidential proclamation enjoins the country's schools, dental practitioners and relevant government agencies and professional organizations to reach out to more people in the countryside, and make them more conscious of the value of good oral/dental health.

Centered on this year's theme "Ngipin Alagaan, Pagkain Pahalagahan; Maganda Mong Ngiti, Yaman ng Bayan, various activities which underscore the need for educating the public in order to make them more aware of the value of good oral/dental health, will be spearheaded by the Philippine Dental Association, the Philippine Association of Dental Colleges, the Department of Health and the Department of Education.

The month-long activities will feature health advocacy campaign projects and community outreach programs such as the Senior Citizen Program; "Give Smile To Kids (Selected Schools) and Cleft Lip / Palate Operations, which will be undertaken by all the affiliates and chapters all over the country of the Philippine Dental Association.

Meanwhile Dental Health Month which carries the theme "Healthy Teeth Campaign" is observed to promote dental health consciousness among the Filipino families.

Through the Healthy Teeth Campaign, the Department of Health promotes regular and proper tooth brushing to avoid occurrence of tooth decay or any gum disease.

DOH in coordination with local government units spearheads in bringing the identified children to the Health Centers, hospitals or identified Examination Posts in the city, municipality or barangay to undergo dental examination.

In a survey conducted by DOH sometime in 1998, it was revealed that 96 our of 100 Filipinos are afflicted by dental caries, hence, in the government's desire to reach out to more people specially in the countryside and make them more conscious about the value of good oral/dental health, the week-long Dental Health celebration was extended to one month.

Just recently, a news article reveals the decline in the toothpaste consumption among Filipinos despite the growth in population and economy. (PIA 8) [top]
