Puerto Princesa City (3 February) -- The Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO) will convene tomorrow the 15th Inter-Agency Meeting on the Mindanao Super Region.

The inter-agency meeting held every two months serves as an avenue for the discussion of the status of Mindanao super region projects and presentation of implementation issues and concerns.

The multi-billion infrastructure support to Mindanao is composed of thirty-six (36) projects on major roads and bridges, seaports, airports, irrigation, power and electrification and hospitals in which 11 are already completed including the Magsaysay Bridge in Butuan, Photovoltaic Power Plant in Cagayan de Oro City, and the 210 megawatts Clean Coal-fired power plant in Phividec, Misamis Oriental among others.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo unveiled the concept of the "super regions" in her 2006 State of the Nation Address (SONA), noting the importance of grouping selected regions and provinces by their economic strengths to stimulate economic growth and development.

The President is optimistic that by enhancing the competitive advantage of the super regions which are North Luzon Agribusiness Quadrangle, Luzon Urban Beltway, Central Philippines, Agribusiness Mindanao and Cyber Services Corridor, the country will be able to achieve unprecedented economic growth and boost national development.

MEDCO serves as the oversight agency in the implementation of the Mindanao Super Region projects.

Expected to attend the meeting are DPWH Secretary Victor A. Domingo and other representatives from Dept. of Budget and Management, Dept. of Agriculture, NEDA, Dept. of Transpsortation and Communications, Dept. of Health, Phil. Ports Authority, Dept. of Energy, National Irrigation Administration, Dept. of Agraian Reform, and the Presidential Management Staff. (PIA) [top]
