Organizers bare 'One Visayas' activities

by A. Lumaque

Roxas City (4 February) -- Various artistic and cultural activities for "One Visayas One People One Destiny" celebration on March 11 to 14 were presented by the organizers during a preparatory meeting last Feb. 3 here.

Department of Tourism (DOT) regional director and One Visayas Technical Working Group (TWG) head Edwin Trompeta led the presentation and a briefing on the concept and rationale of the forthcoming One Visayas.

The four-day celebration will formally kick off with an opening ceremony at the Villareal Stadium here that will be graced by officials of local government units, representatives of regional agencies, state universities and colleges and private sector groups of Regions 6, 7 and 8.

President Gloria Macapagal?Arroyo has been invited and expected to grace the tourism event.

Trompeta said that the activities will include a parade of festivals, concert at the park, food festival, film showing, cooking demonstrations, cultural summit, and series of workshops, cultural and outreach performances, among others.

"It's an art and culture festival of the Visayas regions," Trompeta noted.

The celebration with the theme "Heroes and Nationalism" will be hosted by the Capiz provincial government in close coordination with the RDC in Western Visayas.

For his part, Capiz Gov. Victor A. Tanco said that the province is ready and prepared to host the festival as it had been a host to big tourism events like Indigenous People's (IP) festival and Western Visayas Tourism Assembly (WVTA) in 2009.

"I'm very grateful to the organizers of One Visayas that they put it here in Capiz," Tanco stressed.

The One Visayas was established by the RDC officials of the three Visayas regions in 2008 after agreeing that it is time for Visayans to acknowledge the cultural bond that connects the islands, despite being separated by seawaters.

The first One Visayas was held in Cebu last year. (PIA) [top]
