PCL national confab opens in General Santos City
General Santos City (4 February) -- More than 2,000 Philippine Councilor League (PCL) members rub elbows at the opening today (Feb 4) of the 1st Quarterly National Executive and National Board Meeting at the General Santos City Lagao Gymnasium here.
City Councilor Jose Orlando Acharon said this year's meeting will highlight luminaries from different regions of the country and guests who will speak on pressing issues and concerns of national and international interests.
Aside from the internal concerns of the league, the event, according to Acharon gives importance to the global issues of climate change pointing out that people need to understand the trends and impact of environmental degradation.
Dr. Samuel Martin of the School of Environment Science and Environment of the University of the Philippines-Los Baņos will present "The Consequences of Global Warming and Climate Change" to the delegates.
Meanwhile, Commission on Elections Law Department Director Atty. Ferdinand Rafanan will also speak on the "Rules on Automated Elections for 2010" as the elections fever continue to heat up.
The delegates will be feted to a luncheon with Cabinet Secretary Silvestre Bello III as guest speaker.
Senator Mar Roxas, the opening day's keynote speaker is also expected to arrive later today, said Acharon, the event focal person.
Roxas along with 1st District Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio and host Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. will present the awards to the councilors who have served as "three-termers" in their respective area of responsibility at 7:00 P.M. at the KCC Convention Center here.
The award will be given in recognition of their "exemplary" management and leadership which they have rallied during their stints as legislators.
The next day (Feb 5), the delegates will be toured around General Santos City, Sarangani, and Koronadal City in South Cotabato.
For Koronadal City tour, it will start at 10:30 A.M. They will be toured around Dole Philippines, one of the country's most progressive pineapple plantations that exports high grade pineapple to different parts of the world.
The delegates will also be exposed to the culture-rich eco-tourism destination of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato.
While the delegates tour around the beautiful sites of South Cotabato, the national executive officers and the national board, on the other hand, will hold their meeting at East Asia Royale Hotel in General Santos City. A press conference has also been scheduled in the morning prior to the meeting.
Arthur Pingoy Jr., representative of the 2nd District of South Cotabato will address the delegates during lunch at D' Farm Resort in Koronadal City while the national executive officers will proceed to the municipal hall of Tupi, touted as the "Fruit Capital of South Cotabato."
But organizers said the two teams will finally meet together during lunch at D'Farm Resort. Joining them is former Senator Franklin Drilon as keynote speaker for the day.
Later in the afternoon, the delagates will motor to Sarangani for the closing program. They will be received by host Governor Migs Dominguez at Isla Parilla Resort with Optical Media Board former director Eduardo Manzano as guest of honor.
Former Defense Secretary and LAKAS-KAMPI-CMD standard bearer Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro will cap the event later in the evening with his keynote speech on relevant national issues. (Raine/PIA SarGen) [top]
