Troops arrest two rebels in Zambo Norte

Dipolog City (8 February) -- Combined military and police operatives arrested two high-ranking communist rebels in Zamboanga del Norte recently.

The arrested New People's Army (NPA) leaders were identified as Maria Luisa Purchay alias Byul and Allen Solis alias Totoh.

Purchay is the secretary of the North-Central Mindanao Regional Party Committee (NCMRPC) who carries a reward of P2.6 million for her capture. Solis, on the other hand, is a medical officer of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC).

First Lieutenant Steffani Cacho, Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM) information officer, said the two ranking NPA leaders were arrested last week by the troops manning a checkpoint at Daanglungsod, Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte.

Cacho disclosed that the two were identified through pictures of wanted personalities distributed to the different military and police commands in the region.

Purchay has several standing warrants of arrests issued by the courts of Cagayan de Oro and Butuan cities and Agusan del Sur for murder, homicide and robbery, said Cacho.

The troops have seized from the possession of Purchay a hand grenade and subversive documents "with high intelligence value."

The arrested rebels were place under investigation to determine the extent of their influence in the region. (PF/PIA-ZN) [top]
