Gov. Antonio opens '7in1' SWIP project in Piat
Piat, Cagayan (8 February) -- Governor Alvaro T. Antonio has inaugurated the newly constructed Small Water Impounding Project (SWIP) here that benefits farmers and fisherfolks.
The project is considered the second biggest SWIP in the province which is constructed through the help of the Department of Agriculture and the Provincial Government of Cagayan with 800 meters concrete canal line at an estimated cost of P11.6 million.
According to the Governor, the SWIP will benefit farmers of four barangays, which are considered as one on the rice producing areas in the province.
The project is called 7 in 1 because of its seven specific uses and benefits namely; for irrigation of almost 80 hectares rice fields, for fishery development project, watershed management project, livelihood program, income generation as to the fees to be collected from the users, its potential for eco-tourism and it will serve as capability building for farmers.
The Governor said the project was a commitment of the Provincial Government of Cagayan in bringing the services to the people and as a response to the need of the general public.
He further stated that they will continue to look for opportunities to address the need of the people through sustainable development projects in the province.
Anent to this, the Office of the Provincial Agriculture had also distributed tilapia fingerlings to some identified families who have fishponds as additional livelihood to sustain their daily needs.
