PNP nabs 68 gunban violators in Western Visayas

Roxas City (9 February) -- The Commission on Election?s (COMELEC) gun ban has resulted in the arrest of 68 violators as of Feb. 8 based on the Police Regional Office (PRO) ? 6 records.

The record showed that 58 firearms including 18 high powered calibers, 11 bladed weapons and one grenade were confiscated.

The initial violators of the ban in the region were composed mainly of civilian offenders registering at 60.

"There are now 46 cases filed in court while 16 are still pending for filing," said a PRO 6 online news.

PRO6 director Police Chief Supt. Isagani Cuevas said that the region?s police force will not lie low on their various operations to deter any person from carrying firearms and arrest any one who violates the ban.

"We will be more aggressive in the campaign as we come close to the May 10, 2010 national and local elections," he said.

The accomplishment was based on the reports submitted by the Police Provincial Offices (PPO) of Negros Occidental, Capiz, Antique, Aklan and Iloilo.

The City Police Offices of Bacolod and Iloilo also contributed to the accomplishments.

The implementation of total ban of firearms during the election period was started last Jan. 10 and will end on June 9. (PRO 6/PIA) [top]
