Davao Norte pegs rice sufficiency at higher level than NEDA report

by JMD Abangan

Tagum City (10 February) -- The Provincial Agriculture Office (PAGRO) of Davao del Norte has calculated rice sufficiency of the province at a much higher level than what has been reported by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) XI.

In an interview Monday, Provincial Agriculturist Dominador Encarnacion pegged rice sufficiency level of the province at 91 percent in 2009, way above the 43.3 percent as reported by NEDA XI.

This means that the rice production of Davao del Norte can sufficiently supply 91 percent of its 907,669 population.

Encarnacion said total rice harvest in 2009 reached 196,115.8 metric tons of wet palay, which would total to 171,031.22 metric tons (MT) when converted to dry palay. Such volume was equivalent to 111,170.29 MT of milled rice at 65 percent grains recovery.

He revealed that a planting system called "ratooning", which he explained as second growth of the regular rice crop, had contributed to the overall rice production of Davao del Norte. The ratoon yield in 2009 was pegged at a total of 3,879.26 MT.

Encarnacion did not discount reports of NEDA XI and said that NEDA's reported 43.3 percent rice sufficiency of Davao del Norte was true during the first half of the year in 2009.

"If you multiply it by 2 and add the ratoon production, the result is at the same level with our rice sufficiency estimates at 91 percent," Encarnacion said.

Yearend report of NEDA XI showed Davao del Norte as the second lowest in rice sufficiency level, next to Davao City which had 22.6 percent only. (PIA XI) [top]
