Feature: Tagum becoming RP's music center

By Jean Duron-Abangan

Tagum City (10 February) -- Tagum City is heading its way towards becoming the country's music center with the coming in of musical performers of national and international credence.

In a press conference Tuesday, City of Tagum Tourism Council chairperson Alma Uy said this year's press conference will be bringing in the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra which is on its first time to perform in Mindanao.

Uy revealed that the country's renowned orchestra would come to Tagum free-of-charge because it is on its outreach tour in coordination with the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

"It is very timely for them to come to Mindanao, here in Tagum, in time for the Musikahan," she said.

The Espejo Rondalla which has gained national and international recognition will also be performing during the 10-day Musikahan sa Tagum which will take place from February 19 to February 28.

Uy explained that the coming in of the renowned rondalla is a prelude to Tagum City 's hosting of the International Rondalla in October this year.

The Musikahan sa Tagum will take place in time with National School Press Conference that the city government of Tagum is hosting this year. NSPC will bring in about 3,500 people including student-participants from 17 regions nationwide.

With the dual event alongside with the National Jazz Chant which will also be held in Tagum City on February 16, Uy expected the city's business sector to generate millions of pesos on sales of varied items from souvenirs to food and beverages.

"Just imagine on the first day of the Musikahan, we are expecting 20,000 people to come. At the very least, if each of them would spend P50, how much would that be? That is just for one day. Musikahan is a 10-day event," she said.

Uy was optimistic that the city government of Tagum would be able to get back the P4 million financial assistance that it is extending for this year's Musikahan sa Tagum.

Other the delegations of NSPC and Musikahan competitions, about 200 trade fair exhibitors from as far as Zamboanga City will also be swarming Tagum City to take advantage of business opportunities that the two big event is offering.

They are other than the micro businesses such as the vendors of milk shakes, banana cues, popcorn, kwik-kwik among others who, Uy is looking forward to also join the vibrant commerce and trade during the festival.

Hotels, restaurants, inns and malls are offering discounts not only members of delegations to the twin events but also to visitors who would be visiting the city to witness the lined up activities.

"Grabe ang business activity sa Tagum City during these events," she said. (PIA XI/JMDA) [top]
