Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (10 February) -- The National Statistics Office (NSO) will be conducting a census on population and housing in the country this year to update its data bank necessary for the formulation of development programs and allocation of scarce local and national resources.
"The census is nationwide in scope and requires the assistance of teachers who will be deployed in areas starting this May which will end during the first week of June this year," said Lauro Marquez, NSO provincial director.
Marquez, along with representatives of government agencies such as the Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP), Commission on Population (POPCOM), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) among others convened here Tuesday (February 9) to organize the Provincial Census Coordinating Board (PCCB).
Marquez said the PCCB will oversee the implementation of the national census on population and housing in 275 barangays of the province through the mobilization of teachers.
According to Marquez, a population census which was supposed to be undertaken in 2005 was done in 2007 due to a delay on the release of its budgetary requirements from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
"We hope that this year?s budget will be released soon so that we can go on with the activity," he said.
The nationwide census on population and housing is being pushed by the National Statistical Coordination Board?s (NSCB) declaration on the month of May 2010 as national census month based on its Resolution No. 12. Series of 2009.
The NSCB also issued Resolution No. 14 series of 2009, enjoining agencies to provide assistance to the NSO for the conduct of the 2010 census of population and housing.
