Free toothbrushes, toothpastes highlight dental month celebration

by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (10 February) -- Director Ariel I. Valencia of the Department of Health Center for Health Development 6 (DOH-CHD6) said that toothbrushes and toothpastes were distributed for free among pre-schoolers in three Barangays of Lapaz and Jaro districts, this City.

Valencia said that the activity is in connection with the observance of the Dental Month celebration this February with the theme "Ngipin Alagaan, Pagkain Pahalagahan, Maganda Mong Ngiti, Yaman ng Bayan.

"Proclamation No. 559 declares the whole month of February every year as the National Dental Month aimed to arouse dental consciousness among the Filipino people," Dr. Valencia explained.

He said that a series of activites are programmed for this celebration in partnership with the Iloilo Dental Society.

The DOH-CHD6 Director said that oral health is fundamental to verall health, well-being and quality of life.

A healthy mouth enables people to eat, speak and socialize without pain and discomfort, Valencia said as he emphasized that "taking care of the oral cavity should become a daily habit and be everybody?s responsibility".

A regular visit to the dentist will help prevent tooth decay, gum disease and other disorders.

The celebration?s Kabarangay sa Oral Health included Barangay Baldoza, Barangay Kaingin in Lapaz; and Barangay Buntatala in Jaro.

A Search for Mr. & Ms Healthy Smile will cap the month-long celebration. (PIA6) [top]
