El Niņo to cause P2.3-B crop losses in Negros Occidental
Negros Occ. (10 February) -- The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) here said they project losses in various crop productions, including sugarcane, to hit P2.39 billion.
The projected damage to rice in the province is placed at P351,120,000, corn at P366,012,000 while the projected damage to sugarcane loss is P1,680,000,000 on an estimated 28,000 hectares.
The Department of Agriculture and PAGASA identified Negros Occidental as one of the 23 "highly vulnerable" areas in the country.
At present, the actual damage to crops in five towns and two cities of the province has reached P3.6 million as of Feb 9.
In the city of Himamaylan, damage to rain fed rice is P87,360 while in Kabankalan corn damage reached P162,000.
In the town of Murcia, damage to corn was placed at P1,296,000 while rain fed rice at P182,000.
Cauayan rain fed rice damage is pegged at P36,4000 and corn at P800,120; La Castellana corn damage is P144,000; Ilog- P10,000 and Hinobaan P913,500.
According to PAGASA, the latest onslaught of El Niņo appears to be a mild or moderate one, it could be longer than usual, though, and could possibly last till July instead of only in May or June. (PIA/cad) [top]
