DA-10 intensifies info dissemination on El Niņo

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (10 February) -- An intensified information package on the El Niņo phenomenon will be waged by the Dept. of Agriculture (DA) in Northern Mindanao.

"Although we do not yet experience the very dry spell that has occurred in other parts of the country, specifically in Northern Luzon, it would still be very helpful for our farmers to know what to do in order to mitigate its effects," Regional Executive Director Lealyn A. Ramos of DA, region 10, said.

She said she has directed the DA Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Division (RAFID) to include in their information dissemination the topic on El Niņo and incorporate it in all of the DA activities of the region.

In fact, she said DA-10 has organized information caravans in Bukidnon and Misamis Occidental, two (2) basically farming provinces of the region, during the first semester of the year, wherein topics of El Niņo will be discussed.

Meanwhile, RAFID-10 will initiate the production and distribution of flyers on El Niņo entitled "Kinahanglan Mangandam, Adunay El Niņo o Wala" (We Have to Prepare, Whether or Not There is El Niņo), that highlights the mitigating measures of the phenomenon.

Mary Grace B. Sta. Elena, Head of RAFID-10, the El Niņo topic will be among those included in the School-on-the-Air Programs for farmers aired over two (2) of the region's top rating radio stations.

She also said DA-10 will be issuing an El Niņo Advisory over the broadcast and print media, from time to time, and will do live guestings on other selected radio stations of the region to interview experts to talk on drought tolerant crops.

These experts will include the anchorpersons of the "Garantisadong Masaganang Ani" (GMA) rice projects who will be made to talk regarding the different strategies / activities they have undertaken to address the impact of the El Niņo, in their areas, Sta. Elena added. (PIA 10) [top]
