"Balak Idol: CdeO Edition" launching set

Cagayan de Oro City (10 February) -- City Mayor Constantino "Tinnex" Jaraula and the City Tourism Board chaired by Josy Aliņabon will formally launch the first-ever "Balak Idol: Cagayan de Oro Edition" on Friday, February 12, 3:00 p.m., at the City Tourism Hall.

Contest chairperson Ingrid Chaves-Agudo said the contest, which is open to all residents of Cagayan de Oro City, aims to preserve the art of 'balak'?a debate in poetic verse that is slowly becoming extinct in Philippine society.

The contest also hopes to cultivate the art of public speaking, debate and poetry in the vernacular, and to promote goodwill among members of the community, Agudo added.

Instead of staging the "Balak Idol: Cagayan de Oro Edition" this weekend, the board decided to move the contest date on May 22, in order to generate wide participation of interested local poets.

The grand champion will bring home P15,000 in cash prize plus trophy, while the first and second runner-up will receive P10,000 and P5,000 plus trophy, respectively. The other finalists will get P1,000 each.

For more details, you may visit the City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office at the ground floor of the Tourism Hall, City Hall. (City Information Office) [top]
