60-MW Mahandong A geothermal plant unit 1 in Leyte now back on stream

Tacloban City (February 10) -- The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines informed that the 60-megawatt Mahanagdong A geothermal power plant Unit 2 in Leyte has been back on stream.

Ms. Belinda Sales Canlas, corporate communications officer-Visayas, disclosed that fifty percent or 30-mega watts Mahanagdong A geothermal power plant-Unit 2 in Leyte was back on stream by midnight of February 9.

The full 60-mega watts of Unit 2 became available on stream by Wednesday, February 10.

The other power plants will continue their maintenance activities as earlier announced, Ms. Canlas said.

It would be recalled that on February 1, NGCP announced that the Visayas Grid will be experiencing short fall during peak hours due to zero contingency reserve and generation deficiency.

The grid will experience a deficit of up to 220 megawatts during weekday peak hours with the shut down of the 50-MW Cebu Thermal 1 Plant, the 120-MW Mahanagdong geothermal power plant in Leyte, and the 50-MW gas turbines of Salcon Power.

The first two plants are under preventive maintenance shutdown to make way for maintenance works or repairs, which will improve power facilities and services.

As scheduled, Unit 2 of Mahanagdong was back online on February 8. Unit 1 will be back to the grid on February 16. Cebu Thermal, on the other hand, will be available starting February 23.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reiterated that it does not own nor operate and maintain these power generation facilities.

As the System Operator, NGCP's main responsibilities are to transmit power and operate the power system in accordance with the Philippine Grid Code. (PIA 8) [top]
