Salt fertilizer to help mitigate El Niņo effects on coconuts
by Venus G. Villanueva
Kalibo, Aklan (10 February) -- Using agricultural salt fertilizer on flowering and fruit-bearing coconuts will help mitigate the effects of El Niņo on this crop, according to the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) here.
Plevy Raco, Provincial Coconut Development Manager of the PCA here said that currently, they have 9,781 bags of salt fertilizer for distribution to Aklan's coconut farmers in the province's 17 towns.
"Salt, the major component of the fertilizer, has a water-holding capacity, which will enable the coconuts to store water, preventing them to suffer much from the effects of El Niņo. Actually, we consider the arrival of the salt fertilizer as timely, to protect our coconut trees from the weather phenomenon", Raco said.
The PCA estimates that 4 bags of fertilizer could be applied on 100 trees. The fertilizer will be given for free to interested coconut farmers provided they spend for its transportation from their municipalities to their farms. (PIA) [top]
