DENR Chief favors donation of confiscated logs for gov't projects
Tuguegarao City (11 February) -- The new Regional Executive Director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 2, Forester Benjamin T. Tumaliuan, is open to any request for the donation of confiscated illegal logs for infrastructure projects of government agencies.
Tumaliuan said confiscated logs can be donated to any Local Government Units (LGUs) and other government agencies provided that it will be utilized for projects that benefit the people.
He also stated that by donating the confiscated illegal logs to government institutions, illegal logging and timber poaching may be eliminated.
"If the illegal loggers or poachers can see that we only donate the confiscated illegal logs, there is tendency that illegal activities in the forest can be eliminated", Tumaliuan said.
He also stated that one way to reduce timber poaching, especially in the Province of Isabela, is to deny the market of the products.
"We have a problem on timber poaching in the province of Isabela and we are strategizing some ways to eliminate it, if not to totally eradicate the problem", the Director added.
He also informed that he is working with the governor of Isabela to execute some plans with regards to the continuous campaign against illegal logging and timber poaching in the Sierra Madre Mountains. (Oliver B./PIA 2) [top]
