Napolcom: If you want to be a police officer, take criminology course

by Elaine O. Ratunil

Cagayan de Oro City (11 February) -- The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) will be taking more aggressive action towards police service.

In a media forum held recently, this city, NAPOLCOM Vice-Chairman and Executive Officer Eduardo U. Escueta said, "We take this opportunity during our visit here, in Cagayan de Oro, to announce to the Mindanaoans anything that are happening within NAPOLCOM as well as in PNP, particularly in terms of how we can better effect the future of the members of the PNP."

Escueta said that recently President Arroyo has directed PNP to recruit about 10,000 police officers this year.

The recruitment, Escueta said, is a daunting task for NAPOLCOM because while there are so many who are interested in joining the police force, the fact, is we have not really reached the youth sector in terms of making police profession their first priority.

More often than not the college graduates who want to be policemen are not geared towards the upbeat policemen in the first place. Some of them took up other college courses.

Because of the upgrade in the development in the police force nowadays where they see changes for the better of the organization, the graduates from different courses do apply become policemen but we would like eventually to zero-in on those who really wanted to become policemen and these are the people who usually took criminology course.

We would encourage if they really wanted to be a policeman, they should take this course so that their entry to the police force will make them familiar with the mandate and vision of the PNP immediately rather than "learn the ropes as they are recruited."

In terms of how much of the youth in Mindanao will respond to the invitation of the President that they join PNP, we would like to convey to them the kind of profession they can go into once they choose to become a policeman and hopefully we can attract the best and brightest in the youth sector, both men and women, Escueta added.

Meanwhile, NAPOLCOM announces the nationwide conduct of the PNP Entrance and Promotional Examinations on April 25, 2010. The period of filing for applications which started last February 01, 2010 will end on March 15, 2010.

Application forms can be obtained for free at the NAPOLCOM-NCR office at Jacinta Bldg. 2 1840 Sta. Rita St. Guadalupe Nuevo, Edsa, Makati City, at any of the NAPOLCOM regional offices nationwide or can be downloaded at

Examination fee is Php 400.00 for the Police Officer Exam, Php 450.00 for the Senior Police Officer Exam, Php 500.00 for the Police Inspector Exam and Php 600.00 for the Police Superintendent Exam.

"The exam coverage for the PNP entrance test consists of general information, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and logical reasoning; while the promotional exam includes general information, police administration, police operations and police values and ethical standards," Escueta added.
