Dagupan City (12 February) -- The El Nino Phenomenon has claimed one casualty ? the smallest town in the province.
The sangguniang bayan of Sto. Tomas declared the municipality under state of emergency due to drought.
Vice Mayor Timoteo Dick Villar said the move was necessary as farmers and residents were alarmed of the El Nino Phenomenon affecting the municipality. Mayor Vivien Villar immediately signed the measure.
"Naapektuhang masyado ang mga palayan at maisan dito sa amin kaya naalarma na ang mga opisyales at mga residente dito," the vice mayor said.
Almost 374 hectares of rice field and 482 hectares of corn field are now affected, Villar said. The officials, with the help of Undersecretary and Anti ?Smuggling Chief Antonio Villar, exerted all their efforts to tap irrigation facilities but to no avail.
The town relies on water coming from the main canal and the Agno River through the facilities of the National Irrigation Administration but efforts remained futile, Villar explained.
"Kaya umaapila kami sa ating mahal na Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at sa iba pang opisyales ng mga ahensiya ng gobyerno na tulungan kami sa problemang ito sa aming bayan," the vice mayor said. (PIA-Pangasinan) [top]
