Iloilo City (12 February) -- The Port of Iloilo was chosen as one of the only two pilot ports in the ASEAN region for Sustainable Port Development, as disclosed by Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Manager Atty. Fernando Claveria.

The citation was given under the auspices of the ASEAN Port Authorities, the German Technical Cooperation and Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia.

Claveria, in his briefing with the media during the DOTC-RMC "Ulat sa Bayan" held here, said this is because of the major accomplishments of the agency in pursuing the thrusts of the Arroyo administration for the last nine years.

Claveria said that in support of the development of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway, PPA has provided RORO ramps in the port of Caticlan to address growing demands of travelers and goods, in Iloilo River wharf, in the port of Dumangas.

Claveria said to meet international standards, PPA-PMO Iloilo embarked on massive capital rehabilitation of the Iloilo River wharf, extension of the quay/apron of the Iloilo commercial Port Complex, Extension of Fort San Pedro Terminal by eight meters seaward.

In response to President Arroyo's call to improve delivery of services, PPA constructed the Port of Sebaste, and Sibunag in Guimaras to link to the province of Negros.

Likewise, the port of Lipata, Culasi, Antique was rehabilitated to serve the Central part of Antique, and serve as alternate port to the Province's center Port of San Jose de Buenavista during southwest monsoon.

The PPA chief also said these accomplishments in Region 6 has contributed to the dream of President Arroyo of a seamless link between islands in the Philippines, for safe and efficient transportation modes, enhnce tourism and trade and facilitate food supply chain.

For PPA, Claveria said, it sense of Social Responsibility is of prime importance as manifested in its Gender-sensitive structures that include a Bahay Silungan sa Daungan which serves as temporary shelter for victims or would be victims of illegal recruitment or trafficking.

There is also the Family Room constructed at the Iloilo River Wharf to serve the needs of travelling mothers and babies.

Moreover, to avert terroristic threats, the Ports under the PPA-PMO Iloilo are now compliant to the International Ship and Port Facilities Security Code. (PIA6/ESS) [top]
