Oro chamber hosts Mindanao power outlook confab

Cagayan de Oro City (12 February) -- HE country's first hall of fame most outstanding chamber of commerce?the Oro Chamber, in cooperation with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Industries (COCI) and PIE-MO Industries Association held a forum yesterday on the Mindanao Power Outlook.

The half-day gathering provided an update to the business sector in the greater Cagayan de Oro area about the state of the power supply in Mindanao amidst concerns on the impending rotating blackouts as indicated by National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Eugene Bicar of NGCP presented to the local businessmen Mindanao power supply and demand outlook specifically for the manufacturing and industry sector in the region. He pointed out that, at present, Cagayan de Oro City is fortunate for not feeling the extent of the blackouts yet because of the existence of MINERGY and STEAG.

However, the other areas in Mindanao especially Southern Mindanao already has its share of load shedding.

The participating local stakeholders spearheaded by Oro Chamber will come up with doable short-term measures to cushion the impact of the impending power shortage especially to the manufacturing sector and the other power-intensive industries. Part of the power advocacy is to appeal to government to speed up the repair of the Agus 5 power plant and for Iligan diesel power plant to resume its operations.

Meantime, everyone is encouraged to observe energy-efficient practices and operation.

The other forum partners included Parasat Cable TV, Sunstar CDO, BusinessWeek and Mindanao Current. (Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry) [top]
