PIA Press Release

Kalinga starts rubber tree propagation project

Tabuk City, Kalinga (13 February) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is embarking on a project of planting rubber trees in idle rolling hills here hoping to make forest out of barren lands and turn these as commercial sources of high value forest trees.

This is also expected to start a new revolution of sustained reforestation since rubber tree after six years can be harvested to produce latex for the production of rubber. It can also be maintained and protected since its commercial value assures the operator of the plantation considerable income.

G-melina and Mahogany tree species planted on hundreds of hectares of reforestation projects before did not make a forest because these were either wiped out by fire or unscrupulous people cut them down for swidden farming and fuel.

OIC Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Engr. Ricardo Dang-iw said sites were already selected last December and clearing of one site at Ileb, Nambaran already began. Among the identified locations are 25 hectares in Spring and 25 hectares in Pinukpuk.

"Its work and financial plan was approved and the project will be carried this year," Dang-iw said adding that his office is coordinating with the barangays to look for family partners that will plant, maintain and own the plantation.

Senior Forester Noel Barrientos said this project is a tie-up activity with the Office of Congressman Manuel Agyao, who worked the insertion of said project on the DENR's budget.

He said the scheme will follow the Upland Development Program where individuals contract with DENR to plant and maintain a hectare of land with a P32,000.00 government assistance. Each propagator is required to plant 500 rubber tree seedlings within a one hectare plantation.

Barrientos said DENR will establish its own central nursery aside from nurseries in the plantation sites to produce seedlings or procure from other provinces. He added that initial seedlings are already propagated at the Congressman Agyao's nursery. (PIA-Kalinga) [top]
