AFP troops hoist RP flag in captured NPA camp in Agusan del Norte

Buenavista, Agusan del Norte (February 13) -- Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) troops hoisted on Saturday the Philippine flag at the captured headquarters of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) North-Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCMRC) at Kiholao area in Barangay Guinabsan, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte.

The flag raising was participated in by soldiers of the 30th Infantry Battalion (IB), 6th Scout Ranger (SR) Company and some barangay leaders.

The recovered well-entrenched NCMRC camp, consisting of mini-communal farm, training area, makeshift huts and more than 100 fortified bunkers and listening posts, is located in the mountainous and forested area bordering the towns of Carmen and Buenavista, both of Agusan del Norte, and across Misamis Oriental province.

Reinforcing troops from the 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade took over possession of the overrun NCMRC headquarters.

Earlier reports said the capture of the camp came after a two-hour fierce firefight between government forces and more than 100 heavily-armed NPA rebels Friday morning. The gun battle resulted in a big number of communist rebels killed or critically wounded.

Maj. Mitchele B. Anayron Jr., regional Army spokesman, said one of the NPA fatalities was left behind when the rebels hastily withdrew and abandoned their camp after sensing that they were outgunned and outnumbered as reinforcing combat Army troops were coming from nearby areas.

Troops of the 30th IB and 6th SR Company recovered from the NPA camp several high-powered firearms, claymore mines, assorted live ammunition, generator power set, hand-held radios, office equipment, including laptops, personal belongings, foods, assorted medicines, and anti-government documents.
