Isabela lends water pumps to farmers
Ilagan, Isabela (February 15) -- The provincial government of Isabela is continuously aiding rice farmers aimed at saving their rice fields from further deterioration of rice crops due to the effect of El Niño which is experience in the whole country.
Governor Ma. Gracia Cielo M. Padaca said that the provincial government has started lending water pumps to mitigate the effect of El Nino to groups of rice farmers who are not anymore reached the services of National Irrigation Administration – Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (NIA-MRIIS).
Magat dam officials said last week that the dam waters in the reservoir has already downed on its critical level due to the absence of rainfall in the past months leaving the officials to release water on a weekly basis to service until harvest time the thousands of hectares of rice lands that are on their vegetative and flowering stages.
The Provincial Agriculture Office here reported that there are now a total of P1.7 billion worth of rice and corn damages including high-value crops in the whole province.
Due to the alarming effect of El Nino to agriculture sector in the province, the provincial government officials declared the province under a State of Calamity and give the provincial officials the authority to use its calamity funds to save agriculture products from further damage.
The agriculture office here has continuously lending water pumps to farmers group and is giving cash assistance to these group which will be used for fuel expenses during the pumping period and the shortfall will already be shouldered by the farmers. (PIA Isabela) [top]
