Palawan tourist arrivals up 17.5%

Puerto Princesa City (16 February) -- A total of 268,942 domestic and foreign tourists visited Puerto Princesa City in 2009 registering an increase of 17.55% compared to the 2008 figures. This was disclosed by Corazon B. Timones, City Tourism Officer recently.

Of the 2009 tourist arrivals, a whooping 88 percent or 241,916 are domestic tourists.

The increase in the tourist arrivals has resulted in the construction of additional hotels and inns; and, the creation of new tourism-related business opportunities.

To date, there are already 58 travel agencies, 80 hotels/resorts/inns, 273 tourist transportation operators, 111 tour guides and 195 other tourism related establishments.

Ms. Timones said that as early as January, many hotels/inns and resorts are already booked for the whole year for the holding of conferences, seminars and conventions.

Meanwhile, the City Tourism Office will be more strict in the issuance of licenses to tourism-related establishments (TRE) to ensure the safety and comfort of the visitors in the city. The tourism office is also conducting a round of inspection in all TRE and facilities and will provide penalties to those in violation of specific laws and policies. (PIA) [top]
