ZDS palarong panlalawigan 2010 formally launched

Pagadian City (February 16) -- Elementary and high school athletes across the Division of Zamboanga del Sur gathered on Valentine' Day for the opening of this year's Palarong Panlalawigan at Dumalinao Sports Complex, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur.

Themed "Nurturing Athletes through Sports and Promote Discipline," the five-day event lead by the Department of Education (DepEd) and assisted by the Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Sur and of the Municipality of Dumalinao.

The activity was participated by six Quality Learning Centers (QualCis) in the province with their respective managers.

In its opening ceremony, Congressman Antonio Cerilles warmly welcomed the athletic delegations, as well as the officials of DepEd ? IX and the dignitaries in the province led by Gov. Aurora Cerilles.

Gov. Cerilles, in her speech, explained the role and importance of sports among the youth. "Sports develop the youth not only in health but also in character, discipline, self-confidence, courage to win and teamwork. We need strong and resilient young generation, imbued with determination to win, who shall be soon at the frontlines of service leadership," she said.

She also made mention on the feats of world ? renowned and proud Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao to "be an inspiration to all of us, especially to the youth to reach out for the better things in life."

The lady governor also took the chance to remind the young athletes on the ill effects of illegal drugs in the community, especially among the youth. (PPB PGO PIA 9 Pagadian) [top]
