DSWD turns over P3.2-M worth of shelter units to Lanao town

by Charmaine P. Tadlas

Cagayan de Oro City (17 February) -- Internally displaced persons and families affected by the war that erupted last August 18, 2008 in Kauswagan town, Lanao del Norte have received their share of 35 shelter units through the Modified Shelter Assistance Project of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The units, which are established in barangays Tacub and Libertad, were inaugurated and turned over February 10, 2010, by Acting Secretary Celia C. Yangco and witnessed by Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo, former governor of Lanao del Norte, and Acting Mayor Mastora Mananggolo of Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.

Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte was one of the most affected municipalities during the 2008 conflict initiated by the lawless elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front Group (LMG) which has allegedly harmed 4,000 families residing in the area.

According to the reports by the provincial government, houses were burned, family members were kidnapped and some were also killed.

"The after-effects of the war has caused trauma to these families," said Governor Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo of the Lanao del Norte province.

Stress debriefings, psychosocial therapies, and rehabilitation interventions were conducted by the social welfare department and, together with the Local Government Unit of Kauswagan, a Rehabilitation Program for IDPs was also crafted.

According to Atty. Araceli F. Solamillo, Regional Director of DSWD in region 10, the cost of the Modified Shelter Assistance Project has reached to more than P3.2 Million, including counterparts of the municipal and provincial government.

Each unit costs P50,000 and is complete with toilet, power and water facilities.

Barangay Tacub has received 13 shelter units while Libertad has received 22 shelter units. (DSWD 10) [top]
