NGCP issues power update

San Fernando City, Pampanga (18 February) -- National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the country's electric transmission utility and power system operator, said the Visayas and Mindanao power grids will continue to have reserve deficits due to the limited supply coming from power generating plants.

In Mindanao, most hydro-electric power plant units are running with limited capabilities due to the low water levels at Lake Lanao. These plants include Agus 1 (25 MW), Agus 2 (60 MW), Agus 4 (75 MW), Agus 6 (100 MW), Agus 7 (24 MW), and Pulangi 4 (80 MW).

The power grid status today is as follows:

GridAvailable Capacity
(in megawatts, MW)
Peak Demand
(in megawatts, MW)
Reserves
(in megawatts, MW)
LUZON7,4956,663832
VISAYAS1,0991,180-81
MINDANAO9621,180-218

Because of the generation deficiency in Visayas and Mindanao, electricity supply may not be enough to meet the demand of all power grid users.

The system may be forced to undertake load curtailment in the Visayas and Mindanao grids to ration the available power and ensure the reliability and stability of the entire transmission network.

Customers are advised to directly coordinate with distribution utilities in their area for the complete schedule of power interruptions, if there are any.

Meanwhile, the following power plants are still on scheduled maintenance shutdown to improve existing power facilities and services:

As the System Operator, NGCP is responsible for transmitting high-voltage power from generators to distributors and operating the power system or grid in accordance with the Philippine Grid Code. NGCP does not own nor operate and maintain any power generation and distribution facilities. (NGCP/PIA 3) [top]
