PIA Press Release

DA Cagayan Valley realigns fund for fuel, water pumps for farmers vs El Nino

by Ben Moses Ebreo

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (February 19) -- The Department of Agriculture(DA) has temporarily realigned its fund savings from the procurement of certified seeds inorder to be utilized for mitigation assistance for farmers affected by the El Nino phenomenon in Cagayan Valley region.

DA Regional Executive Director Andrew Villacorta said the realignment of funds was approved by undersecretary Bernie Fondevilla to rescue crops with high chance of recovery in the region.

The new development, Villacorta said is in addition to the regular cloudseeding operations and the preparation of Rodenticides which can be tapped during rat infestation of rice and corn fields in the region.

Villacorta, along with undersecretary Fondevilla were in the province Friday (February 19) and attended the meeting of Municipal Agricultural Officers (MAOs) of Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino provinces.

He said at least 1,250 water pumps with 2 and 3 inches in diameter will be purchased next week for distribution among affected farmers in Cagayan Valley.

"With this, we can reach 10,000 farmers who will be having alternative livelihood in the region," Villacorta said.

According to Villacorta, the fuel assistance at P150,000.00 per municipality will also be given to be used by farmers in operating their water pumps to irrigate their crops.

He however said that there is a need among municipal and provincial local government units to augment their funds to sufficiently address the irrigation needs of farmers in their respective communities.

The assistance, Villacorta added will be given to farmers whose plantations have sources of water and whose crops have high chance of recovery to maximize their benefits. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
