RGADC spearheads observance of National Women's Month

Manila (19 February) -- Per Presidential Proclamation Nos. 224 and 227, and Republic Act No. 6949, every March of year is being observed as National Women's Month. Relative to the celebration, the Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC) is spearheading a number or activities in coordination with the different government offices. This was bared by RGADC Chair and National Statistics Coordination Board Regional Head Evangeline Paran.
According to Paran, this year's celebration is centered on the theme "Babae, tagumpay ka ng bayan!", which aims to highlight women's achievement in paving the way for women's advancement and improvement amidst major challenges.
As a kick off activity, Paran said that the RGADC, during a consultation meeting for the observance of Women's Month this March, plans for a celebration of a Holy Mass at the Santo Niņo Church on March 1, to be followed by a motorcade around the City of Tacloban and this will be sponsored by the City Government of Tacloban.
It was further learned that the next activity, which will be sponsored by the RGADC, will be the holding of a Forum on Magna Carta of Women in the morning of March 8. In the afternoon of the same day, a number of women will be sharing their stories on the struggles and triumphs they encountered in their respective fields.
Finally, Paran continued, culminating activities, which will be centered on the theme "Women with Disabilities Day", will be observed on March 29, and this will be spearheaded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Public Works and Highways.
Relative to the above mentioned activities, Paran is encouraging all government agencies to actively participate and at the same time conduct relevant activities in the observance of Women's Month. Likewise, government agencies are enjoined to display Women's Month streamer in their offices and at the same time wear the Women's Month t-shirt on March 1, during the kick-off activities. With regards to expenses to be incurred, Paran continued, government offices are advised to charge the expenses to the agency's budget for Gender and Dvelopment.
Meanwhile, it was learned that the objective for this year's celebration is to inspire and increase understanding of microentrepreneurs, partners from government agencies, non-government organizations, academe and the private sector on microenterprise development, government programs and services that responds to the issues and concerns of the Filipino women, including but not limited to women's rights, environment, family and work life balance.
Further, it also aims to inculcate knowledge among partners from government agencies, non-government organizations and the private sector on the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Magna Carta of Women.
Lastly, the celebration aims to increase awareness of the general public on the platforms of the presidentiables and other elective officials to advance the status of women. (PIA-8) [top]
