BFAR bares El Niņo action plan

Kalino, Aklan (19 February) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) here bared measures to be undertaken soonest to mitigate the effects of El Niņo on fisheries and other marine resources in Aklan.
The action plan is centered on assisting freshwater fishpond owners and oyster/mussels raisers involving short-term interventions to help mitigate the effects of El Niņo.
According to Alice Robelo of BFAR-Aklan, the province of Aklan has some 25 hectares threatened fishpond areas. To help the fishpond owners in these areas, BFAR will be distributing some 125,000 milkfish fingerlings to 25 beneficiaries in Aklan. Other provinces identified to benefit from the program are Iloilo and Capiz, two provinces in Western Visayas identified to be El Niņo "highly-vulnerable areas".
Talaba and tahong raisers in Aklan will also be given assistance by BFAR. Five (5) beneficiaries involved in oyster culture and another five (5) in mussel (tahong) culture will be aided under the plan.
