PCOS training on in Mt Province

by L. Lopez

Bontoc, Mt. Province (20 February) -- Training for Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) technicians here is on-going as part of the Commission on Election's (Comelec) preparation in the May 10 automated elections.

Sources from the Comelec provincial office said the training which started early this month is targeted to be completed next month. Trainors for the one-day training come from Smartmatic, the company that provides the automation machines for the elections.

Twelve trainees are accommodated per batch daily from Mondays through Saturdays. Cost for the training is shouldered by Place well Company which recruited the participants.

Under Comelec rule, PCOS are hired to provide technical assistance to the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) during the conduct of the elections but are not allowed to touch the machines.

In the province, there are 218 clustered precincts from the 698 number of precincts of the 144 barangays in 10 towns. Each clustered precinct is assisted by a PCOS technician but for the entire municipality, a back -up of two or three others is provided, in case a need arises.

Mt. Province has a total number of registered voters of 102,471 as of January 2010. (PIA) [top]
