7 LGUs to participate in summer jobs for students in Mt Province

Bontoc, Mt. Province (20 February) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has allotted P445,000.00 for this year's Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) in the province.

Jocelyn Culaling of DOLE Mt. Province said the amount represents the 40 percent counterpart of the agency.

Culaling said this year's SPES program is participated by the provincial government and six local government units.

The provincial government together with the six LGUs have committed a total amount of P1,249,784.00 representing their 60 percent counterpart.

Of the total amount, the provincial government has committed P750,000.00; followed by the municipality of Natonin, P133,584.00; Bontoc, P100,000.00; Sagada, P91,200.00; Tadian, P80,000.00; Barlig, P60,000.00; and Besao, P35,000.00.

The students are hired for 20 days each. Their daily wage will be computed based on the income classification of the municipality and the province.

Students from the municipalities of Barlig, Besao and Sagada shall be paid P168.00 per student per day; students of Tadian, Natonin and Bontoc will receive a daily wage of P173.27. Students hired by the provincial government are entitled to a daily wage of P207.91.

Culaling said this year, the DOLE will conduct a pre-qualifying exams to all SPES applicants which will be conducted by DOLE personnel only. It will be conducted in the different municipalities between March and April before the start of the Summer Job.

The qualifying exam is composed of two parts namely, the English Language Proficiency and the Quantitative Analysis and Numerical Reasoning. This is administered to provide equal opportunities to all interested applicants for the program and remove discriminatory selection of SPES beneficiaries; inculcate and advocate the value of competition among the youth.

The results of the exams shall be arranged by score from highest to lowest. This shall be the basis of the final selection of the LGU/employers, especially if there are more applicants than the available SPES slots. Selection shall be done through ranking method. (PIA-MP) [top]
