Baguio City (20 February) -- The Department of Health (DOH) and the Baguio Health Services Office (HSO) awarded plaques of recognition to barangays with the best sanitation practices.

During the Regional Launching of Dengue Awareness Campaign at the Baguio City Multipurpose Hall, Mayor Peter Rey Bautista and DOH Cordillera officials lead by Regional Director Dr. Myrna Cabotaje awarded barangays with the best practice in the prevention and control of dengue cases.

The barangay awardees were SLU-SVP, MRR-Queen of Peace, Atok Trail, Kabayanihan, Andres Bonifacio, South Drive, Middle Quezon Hill and West Bayan Park.

There were four criteria set for the selection of these barangays. First, the barangays should have no cases of dengue for the whole year of 2009.Secondly, the barangays should also be among the top 20 cleanest and greenest barangay in the city.

Barangay officials should have social mobilization aspect is the third criteria. Officials must have characteristics to convince their constituents to conduct their regular clean up drive in their community and mobilize their barangay dengue brigade.

Lastly there must also evidence in the barangay that they are implementing the 4-S campaign of dengue in the prevention and control of dengue.

The DOH intensified the 4-S campaign against dengue which are Search and destroy dengue mosquito breeding grounds, Self protection, Seek early treatment and Say no to indiscriminate fogging and yes to fogging if there is an outbreak or epidemic.

Meanwhile, Bautista commended the DOH and the HSO in the early launching of the anti dengue campaign to let the people prepare for the danger of dengue.

Cabotaje said that the early launching of the Anti dengue campaign is a response of the DOH to the changing climate that could lead to the adaptation of mosquitoes to the warm weather.

Dengue now is not only the rainy season disease but is now a year- round sickness, Cabotaje said. (PIA) [top]
