PIA Press Release

1st KABAGIS party list accredited by Comelec

By Freddie G. Lazaro

Vigan City (23 February) -- Leaders of the 1st Kabagis (Kabalikat ng Bayan Ginhawang Sangkatauhan) lauded the Commission on Election (Comelec) for accrediting their group as partylist organization for the May 10, 2010 polls.

The 1st KABAGIS, a cause-oriented group organized by Ilocano professionals, is one of the 144 party list groups that was recently recognized by the COMELEC.

Felicisimo "Bong" Artajos, one of the group's founding official said, accreditation of their group as party list was very much timely considering that they had already started a lot of programs that would uplift the socio - economic and moral life of the people in the countryside, particularly the youth sectors.

The group has started various programs that focus mainly on quality education, poverty alleviation and jobs generation.

The programs include livelihood trainings and seminars, job counselling and assistance, youth development trainings, sports activities and anti-drug abuse campaign, and series of countrywide civic activities like medical missions, blood donations, relief operations to disaster victims and gift-giving to indigents.

"Actually, we applied before for party list accreditation supposedly for the May 2007 elections but it was disapproved. However, our existing programs and projects continued despite the disapproval by the COMELEC," he said.

"COMELEC accreditation of our group made us very happy as we may able to strengthen and expand our programs for the benefit of our people once we win and have representation in the Congress," Artajos said.

"Our organization is composed of several groups with different expertise to include the religious sector that will help promote peace, moral and development in our country," he added.

The formation of the 1st Kabagis was first initiated by the Samahang Ilokano (SI), an association composed of Ilocano-speaking students from colleges and universities in the northern part of the Philippines.

"We formed the organization considering the accelerating growth of factionalism and disunity among the Filipino people that seems to be dominating the present situation and badly affecting the interest of peace-loving citizenry. The aggravating economic situation as being ignited by the problem of politics, election fraud, job injustice, murders, drugs and others become significant, thus, we realized that it is now timely to formulate an organization to promote unity among Filipinos," he explained.

"Our group runs on the enthusiasm and dignity of young men who are educated and experienced in coping up with the existing situations in our country today. Thus, our group believes in and relies on the ultimate power and guidance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for He knows best," 1st KABAGIS leader Roman M. Wanasen said. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
