Antique gears up for Women's Month

by PS Mabaquiao

San Jose, Antique (23 February) -- March of every year is celebrated as Women's month in compliance to Republic Act 6949.

In Antique, numerous activities were lined up for the month which will be launched with grand parade and program at the EBJ Freedom Park on March 8 in celebration of the International Women's Day with the theme "Babae, Tagumpay ka ng Bayan".

A number of women entrepreneurs will be given Pangkabuhayan Package from the Provincial Government of Antique to help their existing small scale business grow to augment their family income and eventually send their children to school. This undertaking has been part of the women's month celebration for the past five years to give productive women a capital to boost their small enterprise and help family, community get out of poverty.

To respond to some health issues affecting women, a Medical mission will be conducted by the Provincial Health Office and Philippine Charity Sweeptakes Office to Barangay Bongbongan I, Sibalom, Carmelo 1 & 2 of San Remigio. These are far flung barangays where women have hard time going to the Municipal Health Office to seek medical check up.

Like the awarding of Pangkabuhayan Package, Medical Mission for women and children is always part of the annual event and have been conducted in many remote and depressed barangays of the province to give women and their children their day of medical care. Medicines and supplements were distributed as prescribed by the doctors. Together with the check up, pap smear and breast exam will also be undertaken for free.

To strengthen the gender advocacy, radio appearances to local stations will be undertaken with women as speakers on issues such as women and health, governance/politics, labor and employment, violence/ abuses, sexual harassment in the workplace among others.

Success stories of women in different field of endeavors will also be discussed to highlight strength and skills of women to empower and inspire other women to succeed despite challenges.

The activities for the month long celebration is being coordinated by the Provincial Planning and Development Office and the Provincial Inter-Agency Committee on Gender and Development. (PIA) [top]
